Is it dangerous to look underwater? Ophthalmologists clarify all doubts

Since the water in swimming pools is dirty, this is quite harmful to our eyes. Ophthalmologists emphasize that looking underwater is not safe, so they do not recommend it.

First, it would be necessary to know if the water has been bacteriologically tested and is safe. Even if it is, for example, in a pool, the combination of chlorine and ammonia from urine and sweat creates a substance - chloramine, which irritates the eyes.

This irritation can be immediate, it can occur after a few hours, or a few days - it all depends on the concentration of chloramine, as well as the length of time spent looking in the water," says an ophthalmologist, advising children to wear goggles or a diving mask.

The irritation can range from mild stinging and redness to severe infection that requires treatment for more than seven days.

As for rivers and lakes, there are various bacteria and viruses. From this water, we can even get an infection that causes blurred vision or pus in the eye, warn ophthalmologists.
